How to Restore a Deleted Product in Shopify

There is no "undo" button in Shopify

When you delete a product in Shopify, it is gone. Unlike archived products (which can be unarchived), a deleted product is permanently removed — along with its variants, images, metafields, SEO metadata, and URL. Shopify does not have a trash can or recycle bin for products.

This article covers every option available to recover a deleted product, ranked from most to least reliable.

Option 1: Restore from a backup app (fastest and most reliable)

If you had a backup app installed before the deletion, this is your best path to recovery:

  1. Open your backup app and find the most recent backup that contains the deleted product
  2. Locate the product by name, SKU, or browse the product list
  3. Preview the product to confirm it is the correct version
  4. Click restore — the product is recreated with all its data intact

Option 2: Contact Shopify support

Shopify support can sometimes recover deleted products, but with important caveats:

  • Recovery is not guaranteed — it depends on internal data retention timelines
  • You typically need to contact them within 48 hours of deletion
  • They may not be able to recover metafields, SEO metadata, or collection assignments
  • Response time varies — expect 24-72 hours for non-urgent requests
  • Bulk deletions (50+ products) are harder to recover

If you just deleted a product minutes ago and have no backup, contact Shopify support immediately through the admin Help Center. Time matters.

Option 3: Recreate from CSV export

If you previously exported your products as CSV:

  1. Find the exported CSV file on your computer
  2. Filter to the deleted product row(s)
  3. Import back into Shopify via Settings → Import

Limitations: CSV exports do not include product images (only URLs that may have expired), metafields, or SEO data beyond the basic meta title/description.

Option 4: Use Google Cache or Wayback Machine

If the product was indexed by Google, you may be able to find cached versions of the product page. This will not restore the product in Shopify, but you can manually copy the title, description, price, and sometimes images.

Search for cache:yourstore.myshopify.com/products/product-handle in Google.

Option 5: Manual recreation (last resort)

If none of the above options work, you will need to recreate the product manually. Gather information from:

  • Order history (for pricing and variant information)
  • Email campaigns (for images and descriptions)
  • Social media posts (for product photos)
  • Supplier catalogs (for specifications)

How to prevent this in the future

The only reliable prevention is automated backups. Manual discipline fails — people forget, get busy, or do not realize the risk until it is too late.

  • Enable daily auto-backups — so your data is never more than 24 hours behind
  • Set up deletion alerts — get notified when products are removed
  • Restrict admin permissions — limit who can delete products
  • Use backup before bulk operations — make it a team SOP
